Wn335 Pointe du Banc

Small defensive position on east Cotentin coast

Wn335 site overview

What to see

There are many defensive positions along the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula and Wn335 at Pointe du Banc is one of the smaller ones, featuring just three remaining concrete structures.
Located on the mouth of the saltmarsh of the River L’Ay, you can find two open emplacements – ringstand-type constructions which were built for 5cm KwK anti-tank guns.
These weapons were from early Panzers but became obsolete as Allied armour improved. Instead of scrapping them, thousands of these guns would be positioned at coastal sites along the Atlantikwall.
One of the emplacements is now resting on the beach at the end of the spit of land which is now also a naturist beach. The other is partially buried in the scrubland behind.

One of our local contacts tells us there is possibly a third emplacement on the western side of the spit, possibly for an anti-aircraft gun, but we have been unable to find evidence of it due to efforts to protect the dunes from erosion with extensive areas of woven branches lining pathways to trap sand and these may have covered over the area the position is thought to be in.

We were also told of a memorial being placed in the area in recent years – a plaque in remembrance of four US troopers of Troop B/121st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 106th Cavalry Group - SGT Paul J Bearden, PFC Forrest Merritt, PFC Manley LaFleur, and PFC Francis Messmer – who were killed nearby on 23 July 1944.
We were unable to find this but have been informed that it may have been removed in favour of a more permanent memorial in the nearby village instead.
