Gr22 Saint Pair sur Mer

Extensive anti-aircraft gun emplacement on high ground south of Granville

Gr22 Saint Pair sur Mer site overview

What to see

This is one of the most extensive sites in the Granville area and is located south of the port town at Saint-Pair-sur-Mer.
Gr22 occupies the high ground, and this location made it ideal for observation positions and guns located in open emplacements. There were four gun positions here on the clifftop, each with a British-made Vickers 7.5cm M35 gun which were designed as anti-aircraft weapons but could also be used in an artillery role or against shipping.
Designed and built in the early 1930s, Britain opted against using them in favour of other anti-aircraft guns, so they were built under licence for use in European countries. This included Denmark, Finland, Belgium, and the Netherlands where it is likely they were captured by occupying German forces.
Supporting the four guns were a host of other buildings including three observation and range finding posts, two large ammunition storage bunkers, four personnel shelters, and two machine gun posts. On the Rue des Menneries you can also find a large block of concrete which once helped to form a roadblock, possibly with the addition of Belgian gates linked across the roadway.
Not all the buildings here are of German origin, to the north of the positions you can see a French-built searchlight bunker, now a viewing platform overlooking the bay south of the port.
