Wn02 Le Havre
Tobruk and observation post north of airfield

Wn02 site overview

What to see
On the coast to the north of the Le Havre-Octeville airfield are several small bunker sites, including Wn02 near the village of Le Croquet.
A single track road leads to the site, although the clifftop car park at the end of the road has now been closed to the public as parts of it have fallen down to the beach around 50m below.
Fortunately, the two remaining buildings here are over 50m inland of the cliff edge and are safe to visit for the time being.
The first construction you can see is a Vf58C Tobruk which is easily spotted at the edge of the old car park and has a great view over the beach area to the north.
The second building stands in an agricultural field and can only be seen when the crops have been harvested as it’s almost completely buried, just the top of the concrete roof now visible.
This Beobachtung observation post is one of several along this stretch of coastline which would have given early warning to the batteries and airfield sites nearby.
While it is now inaccessible, you can see it matches the other buildings of this type in the area with a rear escape shaft and ladder and an extended front observation post with a protective concrete roof. The main part of the building would have had openings on all four sides for 360 degree vision, while the thick, steel reinforced concrete roof is supported by a central, cross-shaped column which also gave extra anti-shrapnel protection for the crew.
