Pen02 Criel Plage

Small defensive site near the beach at Criel Plage

Pen02 Criel Plage site overview

What to see

Spead across the clifftop landscape at Criel Plage to the west of Le Treport you can find a handful of remains which once formed the Pen02 bunker site.
On the cliffs to the west of the pebble beach area there’s a small ‘schartenstand’, a simple construction which housed a Czech-made Skoda 4.7cm Fortress gun. Even today you can see the ground this weapon would have covered over the beach.
It can be tricky to spot by the side of the main D222 road as unlike many of the German concrete defensive constructions, this one has been camouflaged with the use of local beach stones and is 90 per cent buried into the cliff itself.
Further east are three more structures – an open emplacement for a 5cm KwK anti-tank gun, a small shelter, and a R502 troop bunker – all of which now stand buried in private gardens and are no longer accessible.
