Located in an abandoned farm near to Le Hourdel on the southern side of the Somme estuary you can find two personnel bunkers, both of which were once camouflaged with extra constructions on top of them.
The two bunkers are of a R668 type – one of the most frequently built structures on the Atlantikwall with around 1,500 built - and feature a single entrance, gas lock, crew room for six men, and an emergency exit with ladder.
One of the two bunkers is obscured and inaccessible due to being heavily overgrown and has a shipping container blocking access to it. The other one is easier to view, and the inside can be seen through the emergency escape tunnel.
Both feature brick work which gave them apex roofs made of tiles, disguising the blocky concrete buildings as farm dwellings, although the tiled roof of one has long since collapsed.
Nearby is the famous R612 ‘casemate in the sea’ at Le Hourdel – a fascinating site with brilliant photo opportunities.
