The 88mm gun or Flak 88 was a German dual purpose weapon deployed in both anti-aircraft and anti-tank roles in WWIl.
Over 21,300 were produced during the war.
Secretly developed in the 1920s by Krupp with Bofors of Sweden, against the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, the gun was deployed in action during the Spanish Civil War by the German Condor Legion, fighting for General Franco and his Nationalist Army.
A well trained crew could bring the gun into action in about two and a half minutes. It was a powerful anti-tank weapon able to penetrate over 84mm of armour at a range of around 2,000 metres, making the 88 one of the most formidable weapons of WWIl.
This 88 has been positioned overlooking the town from the east after an extensive restoration project. An anti-aircraft gun of this calibre wasn’t originally located here at Wn43, but there were three 2cm AA guns surrounding the radar positions on this cliff-top strongpoint.
