Wn14 Ouistreham

Bunker site inland of Sword Beach codenamed ‘Sole’ by D-Day planners

Wn14 Ouistreham site overview

What to see

Access to this once extensive bunker site between Colleville-Montgomery and the port town of Ouistreham is difficult today as it stands within farmland and private housing, but much of the original German constructions still exist.
Codenamed ‘Sole’ by the Allied planners of D-Day, it was one of several sites given fish codenames in this Sword Beach sector, which also included Wn14 ‘Sole’, Wn18 ‘Skate’, and Stp20 ‘Cod’. Further inland, the larger sites and batteries were named after British car makers including Hillman, Morris, and Daimler.
It was a site which featured small personnel shelters, a kitchen, water storage bunker, defensive Tobruks for machine guns and mortars, and open emplacements for an anti-tank and an anti-aircraft gun. They were linked by a network of trenches.
The key building here though was the R634 six-embrasure turret bunker which not only provided defence but was a link to the other batteries in the area. It still stands at the eastern edge of the site in farmland, although the heavy steel cupola it once boasted has long since been removed.
