Wn07 Port d'Ouistreham

Small complex covering the entrance to the Caen Canal

Wn07 site overview

What to see

Located on the eastern point of the lock gate entrance to the Caen Canal in Ouistreham, Wn07 offered defence over incoming seaborne invaders.

Like all key positions around port areas, Wn07 was heavily defended and this site boasted a series of anti-tank/landing craft gun casemates and machine gun bunkers, linked by a series of trenches and surrounded by barbed wire fences.

Development on the western bank of the canal entrance has covered over most of the concrete structures once built there, but there are still a few remaining on the eastern side and the tip of the point near the lock entrance.

At the top of the point is a R634 bunker which still features its six embrasure armoured observation and machine gun cupola - a rare sight in Normandy as most of these were removed for their steel scrap value after the war.

Overlooking the lock entrance, in front of the lighthouse, you can still see the outline of a Ringstand for a 5cm KwK anti-tank gun and this position also once featured a machine gun stand and Tobruk for support too.

Facing out into the bay to the east of the point is a very well concealed R667 casemate which would have housed a 5cm KwK anti-tank gun to cover any attack from the east flank.
