Wn Wellenbrecher
Outer defence for larger batterie in nearby Stella Plage
Wn Wellenbrechersite overview
What to see
Just a single R667 casemate remains at Wn Wellenbrecher located to the north of the expanding holiday town of Stella Plage on the Pas de Calais west coast.
The town was the site of a huge Kriegsmarine batterie – Marine Kusten Batterie (MKB) Stella Plage – of which only a single Tobruk and some concrete foundations remain, and the R667 at Wellenbrecher provided defence of its northern perimeter.
Now sealed up, it stands on the beach next to the dunes but would have once stood on top, giving it a commanding view along the beach to the north towards Le Touquet.
Inside was a 5cm KwK anti-tank gun, a weapon originally made for early Panzers but quickly obsolete as Allied armour improved. It then found use in small casemates and open emplacements along the Atlantikwall.
