Wn236 Anse du Poulet
High-level observation and AA post on north Cotentin coast

Wn236 Anse du Poulet site overview

What to see
This small bunker site stands on top of a high rocky outcrop near to Fermanville on the north Cotentin coast east of Cherbourg.
It overlooks the Anse du Poulet beach and bay below and Anse du Brick to the north east, where you can also find Wn203, a bunker site featuring a series of machine gun positions, storage niches, a personnel shelter, and a network of trenches linking them all.
The semi-circular coast road which runs beneath the Wn236 site was previously a railway line where French railway guns operated between the wars. You can also find two tunnel entrances cut into the rocky outcrop which are believed to have been used for ammunition storage. Both entrances are now sealed, one only partially to allow the tunnel to be used for roosting bats.
At the top of the outcrop – near to a modern communications mast - are several concrete constructions, although only one of them was built by German forces.
This is a rectangular, open-type emplacement with a small, covered niche. It was the location for an MG34 ‘Fliegerbeschussgerät’ – a heavy machine gun mounted to operate in an anti-aircraft role, the niche likely to have been for storing its ammunition.
There was also a machine gun/observation post here but it’s difficult to find any remains of this, the other concrete remains on the headland looks to be post-war.
It could have also been incorporated and/or buried by the modern viewing platform which offers superb information panels on the 180 degree view you get here with the port of Cherbourg visible to the west.
