Wn165 and Wn163 Cosqueville

Two inland sites with large workshop buildings

Wn165 and Wn163 sites overview

What to see

Wn165 and Wn163 are located near Cosqueville on the north of the Cotentin peninsula around 1.5km inland form the coast.
The two remaining buildings, one at each site, are both Machinenstands and housed electricity generators and a small workshop which would have provided support for the many bunker sites which can be found in this well-defended area of Normandy.
Both buildings stand on farmland and can only be accessed with permission, although they can both be seen from the roads which run alongside the fields.
The Machinenstand at Wn163 once featured a massive piece of artwork where the artist cleverly incorporated the shape of the rooftop air vents in a Lego Spaceman design. Although now mostly faded, you can still see the outline of the paintwork and the space logo.
Wn165 was an early German batterie site and featured four captured Russian artillery guns of 7.62cm calibre located in four open positions in the fields to the south of where the Machinenstand is now located. The guns were supported by small ammunition niches, an observation post, and two machine gun posts offering an outer ring of defence.
It was likely that these open emplacements were to be superseded by more protective casemates – possibly R669 types – but these were never built, perhaps as the guns in this location were moved to be more effective defences elsewhere in Normandy.
