Wn118 Maltot
Small defensive site on east Cotentin coast

Wn118 Maltot site overview

What to see
On the north east Cotentin coast between Barfleur and Jonville are dozens of small rocky headlands and sandy beaches.
Many of the promontories were fortified by the occupying German forces to provide beachfront defences in front of the larger batteries and strongpoints inland or spread further along the coast.
Wn118 is one of the smaller defensive sites on this coastline and occupies the small rocky outcrop of land at Maltot and featured five constructions.
Two were open emplacements built for 5cm KwK anti-tank guns – but only one can be seen today, now resting on the sandy beach to the north of the Widerstandsnest. The second is within the garden of a holiday home and has been converted into a summer house/storage building. A peek through the windows reveals the original ringstand with ammunition niches used as foundations for the new construction.
At the point of the small headland was another open emplacement – likely an observation and defensive post, although this has now been buried under gardens too with just a few pieces of the circular construction still visible.
In the centre of the site are the overgrown remains of a Vf7b twin room ammunition storage bunker and a Vf69 type Tobruk which was built for a mortar, giving this small site a lot of firepower.
