Wn99 Brevands Le Chalet
Marshland position covering Carentan Canal
Wn99 site overview
What to see
Situated to the north east of Carentan, this small position covered the wide canal area near the village of Brevands.
A mix of personnel shelters, ammunition stores, a small garage, and defensive Tobruks, the remaining concrete builds at this site are difficult to access and largely overgrown. Nearby there are a number of farm barns which were used as barracks for soldiers located here.
The village of Brevands is also the location of the Filthy 13 memorial - a tribute to the demolition team from the 101st Airborne Division - the famous Screaming Eagles - who jumped into Normandy on D-Day.
Nicknamed the Filthy 13 due to their living style while stationed in England, they stood out from the other paratroopers due to their war paint and mohawk haircuts - paying tribute to team member Jake McNeice’s Native American heritage.
The memorial near honours their sacrifice during their successful mission to secure or destroy the bridges over the nearby Douve River.
The Filthy 13 also fought in the mission to capture the nearby town of Carentan, were dropped into Holland as part of Operation Market Garden, and also fought at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.
