Two heavy-duty shelters supporting railway guns

Wn Roswitha

What to see

Located on the eastern outskirts of Marck, near Calais, and just south of the extensive Luftwaffe airfield Stp Bruck site are two heavy-duty shelters which make up the remains of Widerstandsnest ‘Roswitha’.
While its proximity to the airfield may point to a Luftwaffe connection, the two, single roomed buildings are actually linked to the railway guns which operated in the area between 1940 and early 1941.
Established to support Operation Seelowe (Sealion) – the German invasion of Britain – a network of railway lines was created in the area on which massive railway guns would be moved between firing positions located just behind the coast at sites from Boulogne to eastern Calais and as far east as Dunkirk – just a few miles from the English coast.
This area was used by Eisenbahn Batterie 689 who operated two 28cm calibre Schwere Bruno guns along the lines here.
The two buildings stand in an agricultural field next to the modern railway track and were too small to be ammunition storage bunkers so were likely used by personnel as a shelter instead.
