Wn Rosamunde

Variety of personnel buildings and gun casemates

Wn Rosamunde site overview

What to see

This site at Fort Vert to the east of Calais stretches out over 1.2km along the Digue Taaf road behind what was once marshland and is now an area punctuated with many small ponds and lakes used for waterfowl.
Wn Rosamunde stands east of the massive Stp Waldham complex – a site famous for its unique rotating gun casemate – and consists of a mixture of Wellblech personnel buildings, small shelters, two ammunition storage bunkers, and two gun casemates.
The two R680 casemates were built to house 7.5cm Pak40 field guns and these were positioned to create a solid line of crossing fire along the road behind early style, frontline defensive sites Wn Roland and Wn Ria which featured R219 casemates, open emplacements, and pillboxes.
Rosamunde’s shelters are almost all in ruins and overgrown, but you can still see the two R680 casemates as you walk along the road. There are parking spaces at either end of the long road and unless you have a proper 4x4 vehicle then don’t drive along the road!
During the waterfowl shooting season this area is best avoided for your own safety.
