Evolution of a bunker site in evidence

Stp Murane

What to see

This strongpoint inland of Gravelines to the west of Dunkirk is a great example of the evolution of a German batterie with open emplacements being replaced by concrete casemates built to protect the guns.
Located on farmland you can still see three concrete rings of the open emplacements where 7.62cm field guns were located during the winter months when crops are low to the ground.
In the position where a fourth open emplacement would have stood is a fully completed R669 casemate where one of the guns would have been established. This casemate exhibits some serious damage – including a split in the massive, steel reinforced concrete roof which looks to have come from a massive internal explosion – likely from Allied engineers using the building to destroy left over ammunition.
Providing the in-between stage from emplacement to casemate at the site is an unfinished R669 where the foundations of a second casemate can be seen, although this is heavily overgrown and partially flooded.
