Stp Muncheberg

Dunkirk port anti-aircraft gun position

Stp Muncheberg site overview

What to see

Located opposite Dunkirk’s famous East Mole and beach – scene of the mass evacuation of Allied troops in May/June 1940 – Stp Muncheberg was constructed on the point of land across the wide shipping channel which gives access to the main port.
Like many sites in the area, it was constructed as an anti-aircraft gun site to protect the port from Allied bombing raids.
It stands on the same land as Stp Eduard which features two protected lock gates which gave access to the S-Boat pens in the main port area.
Both are part of extensive industrial areas and can no longer be visited by the public.
Stp Muncheberg still features three gun positions – two L409 emplacements and a L410 building - although one of the L409s is now almost completely buried.
All three emplacements were constructed for 3.7cm anti-aircraft guns mounted on top of the concrete structure, with underground rooms for ammunition storage and crew.
The larger L410 differs from the L409 type as it has two crew rooms compared to the latter’s one room and also features a room for the batterie’s commanding officer.
