Stp Dobel

Big gun casemates with extra concrete camouflage

Stp Dobel site overview

What to see

This small but powerful bunker site is one of the most set back from the beaches and port area of Dunkirk – some 6km inland – between the villages of Uxem and Teteghem to the south east of the town.
Now on a private residence, there are two R671 casemates which were built to protect large calibre field guns – usually 105mm - which were mounted on pivots and the open front design of the casemate would allow them to swivel through 120 degrees.
This would give them the ability to reach the beaches to the east of the port all the way east to France’s border with Belgium.
These two casemates differed from the R671 types on the beachfront at Malo Terminus as they were given added concrete to square them off and give them an apex roof to make them look like farmhouse or farm buildings.
One of the casemates shows a small amount of frontal damage but is in great condition for an 80 year old building while the second R671 has been covered in wooden paneling on its exterior and it is use by the farm.
A Leitstand observation post stands near to the modern farmhouse complex. This takes the form of a brick-built tower and was probably originally part of the farm buildings.
The site also features two anti-aircraft gun positions located next to the Canal des Moeres – a wide, straight waterway which could have been used by Allied aircraft as a navigational aid amongst the many randomly shaped agricultural fields in the area. Both AA positions housed 2cm guns.
