Vill027 Auberville

Observation bunkers and tunnel system cut into cliffs

Vill027 site overview

What to see

A lot of excavations took place in the cliffs between Houlgate and Villers-sur-Mer and at Vill027 near Auberville that saw the construction of a series of concrete-lined underground tunnels which were used as barracks by the troops stationed here.
Vill027 is an incredibly overgrown site and can be dangerous to visit. Within the two large shelters there are entrances/exits to a tunnel system but this has now been blocked off and is inaccessible to the public for safety reasons. Both entrances were supported by protective machine gun positions – one in a field constructed building and the other a standard Tobruk attached to the shelter.
Two observation bunkers stand on top of the tunnel system on the highest point of the cliff. They stand just a few metres from each other although one is completely overgrown and not accessible. The other can be accessed with care and the front is best avoided due to its proximity to a huge cliff drop.
Inside there are two crew rooms and a front observation position but beware there is a lot of dumped rubbish inside.
However, there are some original markings on the ceiling of the eastern obs post which point to nearby strongpoints and so is worth the scratches from the brambles covering it!
In their day both buildings offered a wide, uninterrupted view out to sea and along the cliffs between both towns.
