Vill010 Deauville

Beachfront bunker site split into two main areas

Vill010 site overview

What to see

Bunker site codenamed Vill010 on the outskirts of the port town of Deauville stands below the hillside which contains the extensive Mont Canisy batterie.
It’s a site of two halves, with one group of defensive positions split by nearly 600m along the long, sandy beach which runs all the way to the port area.
The largest cluster of remaining concrete buildings are to be found to the south west of the town where you can still see a Vf58c Tobruk, a rare R141c bunker, and a R604 gun garage still in good condition. On the beach are the broken pieces of an open emplacement which would have housed a 5cm KwK anti-tank gun.
Only nine R604 gun casemates were built in this region. These are three roomed buildings with a crew room, ammunition storage space, and a garage for a field gun.
Very few R141c bunkers - a personnel shelter with water supply - were built on the Atlantikwall, although there are six more examples to be found in this part of Normandy, located at Villers-sur-Mer sites Vill022, Vill020, Vill016, Vill015, and Vill014.
The R141c is a substantial sized building, measuring around 12m by 15m with a height of over 5m, which was enough for a large group of soldiers.
There is a second R141c shelter at the north east section of the site where it stands near to a R680 casemate – a large construction which housed a 7.5cm anti-tank gun.
The R141c here is buried in a private garden – all you can see is a mound under the lawn - but you can get up close to the R680 from the promenade and beach.
