Ca02 Point du Hourdel
Small strongpoint on the mouth of Somme river
Ca02 Point du Hourdel site overview
What to see
A small strongpoint located on the spit of land on the southern side of the Baie de Somme estuary it provided defence for the mouth of the river.
That came from a series of small gun bunkers – R600 types for 5cm anti-tank guns – and a larger R612 casemate which housed a 7.5cm assault gun.
It’s the R612 and the remains of one of the R600 emplacements which can be seen on the beach today -one of the most popular tourist beaches in the area.
The R612 rests at an angle on the beach following years of erosion and shifting beach material and is a good exhibit for those wanting to see the large volume of concrete used in foundations on even a relatively small gun casemate.
