Wn06 Sallenelles
Small bunker site now a nature reserve
Wn06 site overview
What to see
A small Widerstandsnest overlooking the marshland at the south eastern edges of the Baie de L'Orne and near to the mouth of the Orne river which leads directly to the city of Caen.
The R634 bunker with a six-embrasure armoured turret for machine guns gave the site its firepower and was supported by a Vf65a type ringstand which housed a 5cm KwK anti-tank gun.
As with most of the turret bunkers in Normandy, the bell-shaped cupola has long since been removed from the top of the bunker. The R634 has had a chequered life since the end of the war and was up until recently a bar and disco. Today Wn06 Sallenelles has been given over to a nature reserve with bird-watching walks along the banks of the estuary now the main activity here.
